Your exact age is three numbers, worked out in this order: the complete years since you were born, then the complete months since your last birthday, then the days left over. Someone born on 14 March 1990, measured on 19 September 2026, is 36 years, 6 months and 5 days old — 36 because that birthday has already gone by this year, 6 because the last monthly anniversary was 14 September, and 5 because that was five days ago. The order is not a preference. Start with the days and the rest of the answer falls apart.
How do you work it out by hand?
- Years. Subtract the birth year from the current year. If today falls earlier in the calendar than the birthday — earlier month, or the same month and an earlier day — subtract one more. For 14 March 1990 counted in September 2026: 2026 − 1990 = 36, and March has already passed, so it stays 36.
- Months. Count whole months forward from the last birthday, stopping before you overshoot the target date. From 14 March 2026 you can reach 14 September 2026 without passing 19 September, so that is 6 months.
- Days. Count from that monthly anniversary to the target date. The 14th to the 19th is 5 days.
Thirty-six years, six months, five days. The same pair of dates is 13,338 days apart, which is the other number worth having and the only one nobody can argue with.
Step two is where it goes wrong. The tempting shortcut is to subtract the two dates field by field — day minus day, month minus month, year minus year — and borrow when a column goes negative. That works for most birthdays and breaks for anyone born on the 29th, 30th or 31st, because there is no agreement about how much to borrow. Take a birth date of 31 March and a target of 30 April. Counting whole months, one month after 31 March is 30 April, so the answer is 1 month and 0 days. Borrowing gives 0 months and 30 days. Both are defensible; they are not the same number.

Why you cannot just divide the days by 365.25
Because the remainder is meaningless. Take the 13,338 days above and divide by 365.2425 — the true average length of a Gregorian year, not the 365.25 most people reach for, which is the older Julian figure — and you get 36.52 years. The leftover works out to 189 days, and dividing that by an average month of 30.44 days gives 6 months and about six and a half days. The real answer is 6 months and 5 days.
A day and a half out, from arithmetic that looks perfectly reasonable. The error is assuming a month has a fixed length. The stretch here runs March to September: four 31-day months against two 30-day ones, and no February anywhere in it. Those six months average 30.67 days, not 30.44. An average month is wrong for whichever months a particular person actually lived through, and the mismatch shows up in the tail.
Days lived does not have this problem, because it never converts anything. It is just a subtraction, and it is the figure to quote when the answer has to be checkable — a records request, a medical form, a bet. Counting the gap between two dates has its own small traps, mostly about whether the first and last days are included, and counting the days between two dates deals with that side of it.
Why two age calculators disagree about the same birthday
The years always match. When calculators differ, it is always the months-and-days tail, and it is always because of the clamping question from the 31 March example: what is one month after a date that does not exist in the next month?
This one clamps to the last day of the shorter month: one month after 31 January is 28 February. Others roll forward to 1 March, or subtract the day numbers and borrow. Nothing is broken in either case; no standard settles which is right. It only ever affects births on the 29th, 30th and 31st, which is why most people never notice.
The practical rule: if the months-and-days figure has to survive scrutiny, say which convention you used, or give the total days instead.
What happens if you were born on 29 February
A leap-day birthday has a real anniversary roughly once every four years, so every calculator has to invent a rule for the other three. Ours clamps to 28 February, meaning a baby born on 29 February 2024 turns one on 28 February 2025. Plenty of other tools use 1 March instead, on the argument that a full year has not elapsed until 28 February is over.
Neither is a fact about the world. It is a convention, and the legal rule where you live may be a third thing again, since ages for licences, benefits and majority are set by national law rather than by arithmetic. If the exact day carries a legal consequence, check your own jurisdiction rather than any calculator, this one included. And the four-year cycle itself has a gap: leap years skip the century mark unless the year divides by 400, so 2000 had a 29 February, 1900 did not, and 2100 will not.
How old will I be on a specific date?
Same three steps, measured to that date instead of to today. Today is the wrong date more often than it looks:
- School and sport eligibility is almost always "age on a fixed cut-off date", not age today. A child who is 5 in November may still be a four-year-old as far as the 1 September cut-off is concerned.
- Visa, exam and pension thresholds work the same way: age on the date of application or the date of the test.
- Historical dates. How old someone was in the photograph, or at the census entry.
Counting backwards by hand is the error-prone direction: you have to judge whether the birthday in the target year had happened yet, and it is easy to answer that for the wrong year. When all you need is the raw gap, with no interest in how it splits, the difference between two dates is the blunter version of the same job.
When your exact age is not the number being asked for
The three steps give your international age: complete years elapsed. Several systems in everyday use quietly mean something else.
Insurance. Life insurers commonly price on "age nearest birthday", which rounds you up for half of every year. Being quoted as 41 when you are 40 years and 7 months is the system working as designed, not an error.
East Asian age reckoning. The traditional Korean count started you at one on the day of birth and added a year at every New Year, putting you up to two years above the international figure. South Korea standardised official and administrative ages on the international count in June 2023, but the traditional number still comes up in conversation.
Milestones. Ten thousand days lands about four and a half months after your 27th birthday — worth a note in the calendar, worth nothing on a form.
What the calculation leaves out
Age here is a calendar fact, not a clock fact. The time of birth plays no part, so a birth at 00:10 and one at 23:50 on the same day produce the same age, and days lived counts calendar days rather than 24-hour periods. Time zones get the same treatment: a baby born at 23:40 in Auckland arrived on a date that was still the previous day in London, and documents record the local date at the place of birth, which is the one to use. One more for old records — dates from before a country switched calendars, Britain in 1752 or Russia in 1918, may be Julian in the source and will be read as Gregorian by any modern calculation.
The age calculator does all of this in the browser: the years-months-days split, the total days lived, the next birthday, and any target date you care to put in the second field. Nothing is sent anywhere, which matters more than usual when the input is somebody's date of birth.
